Company Description
Who We Are
AMS Corporation is a nuclear engineering services company based in Knoxville, Tennessee, with a mission to ensure the safe operation of the worldwide nuclear fleet. Founded in 1977 as a spinoff of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee, AMS has nearly 50 years of experience developing innovative testing technologies and engineering solutions that help nuclear facilities maintain safe, reliable, and compliant instrumentation and control (I&C) systems.
What It’s Like to Work Here
At AMS, you’ll join a collaborative team of experts across nuclear, electrical, mechanical, computer, and materials engineering. We invest heavily in research and development, encourage creativity in problem-solving, and provide hands-on opportunities to contribute from day one. Many employees build long careers here because they’re able to learn continuously, take on diverse technical challenges, and work in an environment guided by teamwork, respect, and shared purpose.
Job Description
The goal of an Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer at AMS is to solve complex electromagnetic compatibility challenges that protect the safe and reliable operation of critical systems in nuclear power plants and other demanding environments. Our engineers are not simply running tests; they are trusted problem-solvers who think critically, communicate clearly, and represent AMS with professionalism and integrity to our customers. One of the most important components to successfully serving our clients is hiring engineers who combine strong technical aptitude with sound judgment, attention to detail, and a service-oriented mindset.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and execute EMC/EMI test plans for customer equipment, following established procedures while adapting methods to the specifics of each system under test.
- Perform a wide range of EMC qualification tests in the lab (e.g., emissions, immunity, surge, ESD, RF susceptibility) using diverse test equipment and software, and document results accurately.
- Draft and refine technical reports and related documentation with close attention to detail, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency with applicable standards and customer requirements.
- Support troubleshooting and problem resolution for systems that do not initially meet EMC criteria, working with internal teams and customers to identify root causes and recommend practical fixes.
- Participate in on-site work at customer facilities or nuclear plants as needed, which may include emissions surveys, in-plant measurements, field troubleshooting, or on-site qualification testing.
Qualifications
Who We’re Looking For
- Curious and proactive learner with the drive to master new standards, tools, and test methods
- Critical thinker with a problem-solving mindset who is comfortable operating in “gray areas” where engineering judgment is required
- Professional and customer-oriented communicator who represents AMS well in both lab and field environments
- Personally accountable, reliable, and consistent in follow-through, able to complete work with minimal supervision
- Team-oriented collaborator who works effectively with technicians, engineers, and other stakeholders to maintain a positive, respectful work environment
Required Qualifications
- Holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in engineering, physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Brings 3 to 7 years of EMC engineering, test engineering, or related technical experience (preferred).
- Possesses relevant background in one or more of the following areas: test lab operations, systems integration, aerospace, automotive, or military equipment development.
- Demonstrates familiarity with EMC testing standards and methods (e.g., MIL-STD-461, IEC 61000 series), common test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, EMI receivers), and associated test documentation practices.
- Holds (or is willing to pursue) an iNARTE certification or equivalent EMC technical certification; preferred but not required.
- Shows a strong desire to learn new standards, tools, and testing methods, and takes initiative to master them independently.
- Brings a problem-solving mindset with the ability to think critically and work effectively in ambiguous engineering situations that require sound judgment beyond standard procedures.
- Demonstrates excellent attention to detail, particularly in technical documentation, test planning, and report writing.
- Communicates professionally with strong customer-service orientation, able to explain technical concepts clearly to internal teams and external clients.
- Is willing to travel to customer facilities and nuclear plants as needed to support on-site testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
- This position involves work under U.S. Department of Energy contracts and requires access to nuclear facilities. As a result, U.S. citizenship is required to meet federal compliance and security-access regulations.
